Change Your WordPress Favicon In 3 Easy Steps
In case you didn’t notice, I recently changed my WordPress favicon on here, so I wanted to show you how you can change your favicon in 3 easy steps, even if you’re non-technical and don’t know a thing about coding.
Step 1: Create a WordPress Favicon For Your Site
As you can see, a favicon is really just a fancy name for a small, square picture that appears next to the address bar in your browser, so to start, you need a square graphic for your WordPress favicon.

It’s important that the graphic you start with is square because the favicon is going to end up being 16X16 pixels and won’t look right if the dimensions aren’t equal on all sides. Make sense?
Start out by going to www.Favicon.cc and upload your image by clicking “Import Image”. Once your WordPress favicon is created, you’re going to want to download it to your computer by clicking “Download Favicon” under the preview area (it’s easy to miss at first, but it’s right below the picture in the center of the page).
Here’s an important point: The filename should be saved as “favicon.ico”. The site automatically does that for you, so as long as you don’t change it to something random, you should be alright.
Step 2: Install Your WordPress Favicon On Your Site Using FTP

This might sound intimidating to some people, but it’s actually super simple to do. If you don’t have an FTP client, you can download Filezilla or many other programs for free to complete this step.
Now, you’re going to connect to your WordPress site using your FTP program by putting in your name and password. Once you’re connected to the server, locate the folder on your server named “public_html”. There’s a small chance it could be named something else, but I’ve never seen it named anything else personally.
Worst case, your webhost will be able to tell you how to get to your root directory if you get lost here, but trust me, this is really simple.
After opening up your “public_html” folder, scroll down until you find the folder that matches the name of your website. This is your root folder for your site and the folder where you’re going to move your new favicon. Locate your new WordPress favicon on your computer, drag and drop it into the folder that matches your website name, and overwrite the old favicon.ico file.
You can check to make sure this worked by going to “www.YourDomain.com/favicon.ico”. If you see the new image, congratulations! If not, make sure you put the file in the right folder or clear the cache on your browser and try again.
We’re almost done!
Step 3: Install the Shockingly Simple Favicon Plugin to WordPress
Normally, this step would entail editing your website’s header and adding some simple code, but who really wants to do that when you can just use a WordPress plugin to add the favicon instead? Amirite?
After you install the Shockingly Simple Favicon plugin, open it up under the “Settings” box in your WordPress dashboard and make sure that the favicon URL field is set for “www.YourDomain.com/favicon.ico” – or wherever on your server the file is located, but this is the default and easiest way. Leave the Admin favicon box set at “default”, click save, and you’re done!
Now, when your visitors go to your site, they’re going to see your new favicon looking them in the face and will marvel at how ridiculously awesome you are.
